SAN DIEGO – Three men were on the run Wednesday morning after trying to steal an ATM from a CVS Pharmacy in Rancho Penasquitos, San Diego police said.

The men were unable to get away with the ATM after hooking a chain from their vehicle to the machine. They succeeded in pulling the ATM pedastal over but were unable to tear it loose and pull it outside the pharmacy. By the time police arrived, the would-be thieves had abandoned their efforts and fled.  The chain was still looped around the machine and led out the door into the parking lot of the pharmacy on the 9200 block of Twins Trails Drive.

Police found a stolen Ford F-250 believed to have been used in the attempted theft abandoned at the on-ramp to state Route 56 from Black Mountain Road.

The incident remained under investigation Wednesday morning. Anyone with information was asked to call police.
