SAN DIEGO – A water main break in the Bay Terraces neighborhood created a sinkhole and shut down a road Thursday morning, police said.

The water main flooded Saipan Drive around 5 a.m. and left several homes without water. San Diego water managed to stop the flow around 5:30. It was unclear what caused the break or when water would be restored to those homes.

Saipan Drive remained closed between Potomac Street and Calle Tortuosa as crews worked to fix the sinkhole, according to police. San Diego Water was not sure how many gallons of water were lost in the leak.
