POWAY, Ca - The Poway City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday night against allowing dogs to run off leash at Silverset Park for a 6-month trial.
About 100 concerned residents, including the Poway Girls Softball League and their parents, filled the chambers for the Poway City Council meeting . They voiced their strong opposition to sharing the softball field at the park with off-leash dogs.
During the proposed trial period, dogs would have been able to run in an enclosed softball field from 7-10 a.m., Monday through Friday. During the trial, an environmentalist would have been paid $29,000 by the city to gather data. Another $2,000 would have been spent on signs and gates.
Supporters argued there would be no issues so long as owners were responsible for their pets. Opponents argued it would create a hazardous environment for the children who used the park for softball practice and games, saying dog waste would be concentrated in a small confined space.
They also argued pointed out that there is a dedicated dog park about 2 miles away from Silverset Park, saying Poway did not need two dog parks.
