VISTA, Calif. — A man who fatally stabbed his estranged wife at their workplace in Carlsbad was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years to life in prison.

Pedro Rosalino Zurita, 50, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to second-degree murder for the April 12, 2014, stabbing of Ariflor Gonzalez.

Deputy District Attorney Susan Gust said the defendant felt the 37-year-old victim was moving on from the relationship and had rebuffed his efforts to reconcile.

Surveillance cameras captured Zurita chasing Gonzalez through a parking lot at a business park on Van Allen Way.

Gonzalez was stabbed more than 30 times before the defendant sped off in a car, Gust said. He was arrested an hour later. Police found the victim’s body around 8 p.m.

The couple — who had four children together — had been married for 22 years but separated in December 2013.
