Fire rips through Grantville restaurant

SAN DIEGO – A firefighter was recovering Tuesday morning after falling off a ladder while battling a 2-alarm fire in Grantville, the San Diego Fire Department said.

The fire started just before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday near Alvarado Canyon Place at Chris’ Ono Grinds Island Cafe & Grill and spread to an adjacent gym. San Diego police were the first on scene and San Diego fire arrived shortly thereafter.

Heartland Fire was also called to help put out the blaze. In total, around 60 firefighters worked to put out the fire, which is well above average for a typical structure fire, according to San Diego fire.

Firefighters attacked flames from both sides of the restaurant and cut through a fence behind the building so they could get inside. They had the blaze out in about 30 minutes.  One firefighter was taken to the hospital after he fell off a ladder. He was expected to be okay.

No one was inside either business during the fire. The next-door gym sustained smoke damage. The owner of the cafe was at the scene Tuesday morning assessing the damage, which was estimated at $500,000.

Investigators were trying to determine what started the fire.
