SAN DIEGO — A suspected carjacker dove into San Diego Bay in an unsuccessful attempt to elude police after crashing his victim’s car during a chase from downtown to Point Loma, authorities said Monday.

The 47-year-old suspect hopped into the 23-year-old victim’s 2015 Honda on Broadway near Seventh Avenue around 9:45 p.m. Sunday and forced her to drive off, San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros said. He later took over driving. The victim was somehow able to escape and call police, he said.

Officers spotted the car near Spanish Landing Park and chased it into the 1400 block of Scott Street, where the driver crashed into two light poles, Delimitros said. He ran from the car and jumped into the bay in an attempt to evade arrest, but was taken into custody a short time later, Delimitros said.

The suspect’s name was not immediately available.
