Multiple drivers reported that they had to swerve to avoid hitting the man, who was walking in and out of traffic on the eastbound lanes of the freeway. At least two vehicles were not able to avoid the man, and he was struck and killed just before 1 a.m., the CHP said.
Paramedics arrived shortly after the accident and pronounced the man dead. His identity had not been released. Route 78 and the on-ramp for El Camino Real were both closed while police investigated the accident.
Investigators were looking into the possibility that the accident may have been a suicide.
