SAN DIEGO - Train service was halted for about two hours Thursday morning after a Coaster train hit  and killed a woman in Del Mar, Sheriff's deputies said.

The Coaster train was heading south when it struck the woman around 5:45 a.m. near 15th Street in Del Mar. Service was stopped between the Santa Fe Depot and the Solana Beach Station for about two hours while crews investigated the accident.  A woman ignored the train operator's attempt to avoid a collision by sounding a horn, authorities said.

“The operator activated the emergency braking system but was unable to stop the train before striking the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene,'' according to San Diego County sheriff's Deputy Amber Reeves.

All trains returned to a normal schedule at 7:45 a.m.  with a six to eight minute delay due to a speed restriction imposed because of the accident. Trains were running north of the Solana Beach station and south of Santa Fe Depot during the shutdown. Commuters were transported by buses between the two stations.

San Diego Sheriff's Deputies remained on scene throughout the morning investigating the accident.

Her identity was not immediately known, according to the deputy.

I’m a passenger on the stopped train. An investigation was completed by officials around 7:15 a.m.and Coaster resumed southbound travel
to Sorrento Valley station stop. Presently, we are waiting for connecting commuter buses and will then continue to Old Town and San Diego. E.T.A. 8:10 a.m.

where it made its normal stop at SORRENTO VALLEY station.

I sure wish that the reporters would get more information. That is the 3rd one this year. Are these people committing suicide or what? It only takes about 3-4 seconds to get off of the tracks when you hear the horn so it is hard to believe that this is anything but suicide.
