The Coaster train was heading south when it struck the woman around 5:45 a.m. near 15th Street in Del Mar. Service was stopped between the Santa Fe Depot and the Solana Beach Station for about two hours while crews investigated the accident. A woman ignored the train operator's attempt to avoid a collision by sounding a horn, authorities said.
“The operator activated the emergency braking system but was unable to stop the train before striking the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene,'' according to San Diego County sheriff's Deputy Amber Reeves.
All trains returned to a normal schedule at 7:45 a.m. with a six to eight minute delay due to a speed restriction imposed because of the accident. Trains were running north of the Solana Beach station and south of Santa Fe Depot during the shutdown. Commuters were transported by buses between the two stations.
San Diego Sheriff's Deputies remained on scene throughout the morning investigating the accident.
Her identity was not immediately known, according to the deputy.
