SAN DIEGO -- The Coast Guard and San Diego Harbor police searched late Friday night and into Saturday for a 76-year-old hearing impaired man who did not sail in as expected from a sailing trip.

Richard Byhre was reported missing by his wife of 34 years, who told authorities he left their Palm Desert home February 10th and had not returned from a trip.

“He often comes down to the boat – just goes sailing. So I wasn’t worried except when he didn’t come home for Valentine's. I got flowers for Valentine's, but he wasn’t there," said Bonnie Byhre.

Byhre is white, 5 feet 8 and 210 pounds with white hair and a mustache. His vessel is the 28-foot Princess, which is homeported at the Southwestern Yacht Club on Shelter Island.

The Coast Guard went through surrounding marinas and harbors, but called off the search because Byhre did not have a known destination.

“The information got to us so late – we don’t have a reasonable search area. We don’t know exactly where to search,” said Rob Simpson, a Coast Guard public affairs specialist.

The Coast Guard asked anyone with information on the whereabouts of Byhre or the Princess to call them at 619-278-7057, or to contact the Harbor Police at 619-686-6272.
