SAN DIEGO –  A 47-year-old man was killed Wednesday night when he crashed his dirt bike into a curb and was thrown into a street sign, police said.

The man was riding his dirt bike near Point Loma around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday when he lost control, hit a curb and flew off the bike  into a sign pole on the corner of Locust Street and Nimitz Boulevard, police said.  Paramedics performed CPR on the man and he was taken to UC-San Diego hospital with major chest and abdominal trauma, where he later died.

Investigators don’t believe drugs or alcohol played a part in the crash. Nimitz Boulevard was closed for around four hours while police investigated the accident. It was reopened just before 2:30 a.m.

The victim’s name was not immediately released.
