Border Patrol agents open fire during chase in Alpine

SAN DIEGO – Border Patrol agents opened fire on a suspected immigrant smuggler after he nearly ran down an officer during a pursuit Tuesday night, authorities said.

Border Patrol agents tried to pull a vehicle over on the 22000 block of Japatul Valley Road in Alpine around 10 p.m. Tuesday. At first the driver refused to pull over, but he stopped a short time later and several passengers jumped out of the car and ran off. The  driver then sped off,  nearly hitting one of the Border Patrol officers.  Several officers agents opened fire on the car.

The driver led agents on a chase along westbound Interstate 8, but he finally pulled over at Tavern Road at 10:14 p.m., where he was  arrested.  The driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries and released to the custody of the Border Patrol.

No Border Patrol agents were hurt.
