Man re-arrested in beating death of girlfriend
SAN DIEGO — A man already in jail on a probation violation was re-arrested Friday on suspicion of murdering his homeless girlfriend in a Bostonia-area neighborhood last fall.
Eugene Gregg Niggel, 53, is accused of fatally bludgeoning 63-year-old Linda Irwin, who died at Sharp Memorial Hospital on the evening of Nov. 19. The county Medical Examiner’s Office ruled her death a homicide.
Investigators believe Niggel, also a transient, assaulted Irwin in the 1100 block of Pepper Drive, just north of El Cajon, within several days of her death, sheriff’s Lt. Kenneth Nelson said.
Niggel was expected to be charged with first-degree murder and a domestic-violence count at his arraignment, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
The motive for the alleged slaying was unclear, the lieutenant said.
