They have voiced there is not enough attention drawn to the crosswalks, so drivers aren't slowing down in time for pedestrians.
Neighbors also blame speeding and distracted driving as major issues.
They said they would like to see the City of Carlsbad have something done about the lighting for the crosswalks, because they are not properly lit.
There is a crosswalk every 2 blocks, with neon signs at both ends of the sidewalk as well as the center median. However, neighbors want blinking lights like the crosswalks near Carlsbad Village.
They also pointed out at the street lights that line Carlsbad Blvd. Most have two lights, but the ones closest to the crosswalks only have one light. They are upset at the fact there are no street lights directly on the crosswalks to provide light for the pedestrians, as well as the drivers who may be approaching the crosswalks at night.
The City of Carlsbad said in a statement Monday they, "have made significant safety improvements along Carlsbad Boulevard, including new crosswalks, new street lights, raised medians to hep protect pedestrians as they cross the street, large signs at the side of each crosswalk and in the medians, as well as flashing lights at the crosswalk closest to the Village area, where there is more nighttime activity."
They also plan to present to the City Council at an upcoming meeting, the request for additional flashing lights along Carlsbad Blvd. During that meeting, they will also present results from the safety measures already put in place.
