SAN DIEGO — A vehicle fire outside a Kearny Mesa gas station Wednesday left a man severely injured.

Someone called for help after spotting the man and the flaming vehicle shortly before 5:30 p.m. at the Shell gas station on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard near Convoy Street, according to the California Highway Patrol and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Arriving firefighters extinguished the blaze.

The unidentified man was taken to the burn center at UC San Diego Medical Center with burns to around 40 percent of his body,  SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said.

Police and members of the Metro Arson Strike Team were looking into what caused the fire, authorities said.
