SAN DIEGO -- A homeless man was killed when he was hit by three vehicles, including a garbage truck, on a freeway offramp in the Sports Arena area early Thursday, authorities said.

The Republic Services trash-collection vehicle had just exited westbound Interstate 8 when it struck the 63-year-old man in the 3600 block of Camino del Rio West about 4:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol and San Diego police.

Moments later, a Jeep Cherokee and Honda Civic ran over the victim as he lay in the roadway. The unidentified man died at the scene.

Investigators said the truck was traveling at about 25 mph when the man walked into its path. The driver was unable to avoid hitting the man, they added. All the vehicles remained at the scene of the accident, police said.

The freeway exit remained closed until 10 a.m. to allow authorities to investigate.
