CORONADO, Calif. — A 44-year-old man died after becoming unresponsive while swimming off the Coronado coastline, authorities said today.

Shawn R. Stewart of Coronado was swimming with a friend shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday when he began complaining of shortness of breath, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Stewart became unresponsive and was taken to shore where lifeguards tried in vain to resuscitate him, officials with the Medical Examiner’s Office said. He was pronounced dead about a half hour later.

Authorities said an autopsy had not been performed as of this morning.
