Mountain lion attacks 6-year-old boy

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The search for a mountain lion that attacked a 6-year-old boy while on a hike with his family was underway in Northern California Sunday.

Authorities reported getting an emergency call at 1 p.m. about the attack which happened about 2 miles from Pichetti Winery near Cupertino, Santa Clara County Sheriff Sgt. Kurtis Stenderup said.

The unidentified boy suffered unspecified injuries and was expected to survive, Stenderup said.

Deputies closed the trails which are owned by MidPeninsula Regional Open Space District, a group that protects land in the San Francisco Bay area.

The circumstances of the attack were unknown as of 5 p.m. and authorities were planning on looking for the mountain lion until sunset Sunday.
