OCEANSIDE, Calif. — The discovery of what appeared to be three sticks of dynamite in the garage of a vacant Oceanside residence Wednesday prompted precautionary evacuations of nearby homes until bomb-squad personnel safely removed the possibly dangerous devices.

A member of a cleaning crew hired by the owners of the rental house in the 600 block of Garfield Street made an emergency call about 9:45 a.m. to report finding the suspected explosives, according to police.

The cylindrical objects were believed to be at least 10 years old, raising concern that any chemicals inside them might be hazardously unstable, Lt. Val Sadaat said.

Officers summoned a sheriff’s bomb squad and evacuated about a dozen surrounding residences, Sadaat said.

The explosives team safely removed the objects and gave an all-clear about 2:45 p.m., Lt. Leonard Cosby said. The evacuated residents were then allowed to return to their homes.
