Police responded to several calls about 5:45 a.m. Saturday reporting a disturbance and possible robbery in the 3800 block of Pershing Avenue, just south of University Avenue, San Diego police Lt. Paul Rorrison said.

When officers arrived on scene they found a 38-year-old man unconscious and not breathing with significant injuries to his upper torso, Rorrison said. The man was taken to a local hospital and was not expected to survive, Rorrison said.

Officers arrested three men in connection with the beating and believe the fight broke out because of a dispute over money, Rorrison said.

Homicide detectives were called to investigate because the man was not expected to survive, Rorrison said. The man’s identity was known to police but was not being released until his family was notified.

As of about 11:30 a.m. Saturday, the 3800 block of Pershing was expected to be closed for a few hours as detectives conducted an investigation, Rorrison said.
