Races scheduled to be on the turf track will be moved to Polytrack through Sunday, officials said. The races will go on as scheduled.
Eight horse deaths were reported in the first nine days of the 2014 season. Del Mar Thoroughbred Club officials said crews performed extensive maintenance measures to enhance safety on the turf course since meeting with the California Horse Racing Board on Tuesday.
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club officials released a statement:
“Given this additional injury on our turf course, we now will discontinue racing on it for the remained of this week. We will continue efforts to improve the course during this down time and hope to resume racing on it in the near future.”
Crews will continue to work with California Horse Racing Board, horse owners, trainers and jockeys in an attempt to understand and solve the problem.
