LAKESIDE, Calif. – One person was killed, two were injured and another was missing after a speeding boat crashed into another that was drifting on a reservoir north of Alpine Thursday night, authorities said.

The collision occurred around 7:10 p.m. on El Capitan Reservoir, which is about 30 miles northeast of downtown San Diego between Lakeside and Alpine, said Lt. Herb Taft of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

A 21-year-old man in the drifting boat was dead at the scene. The two people in the speeding boat were taken to a hospital for treatment of minor cuts and bruises. A 20-year-old man who was in the drifting boat was missing, according to a fire department dispatcher.

A search for the missing man was suspended overnight, but it resumed Friday morning.

Because the crash happened in a San Diego-owned reservoir, the investigation was being conducted by the San Diego Police Department, Taft said, but an officer there was not immediately able to provide details.
