crime-sceneLA MESA, Calif. – A La Mesa man awoke to find two men burglarizing his home, and police used an iPhone application to track the suspects to Chula Vista before they were arrested two hours later back in La Mesa.

Luis Pelayo and Luis Gallardo, both 21 and both San Diego residents, were arrested around 2 a.m. today near Murray Hill Road and Yale Avenue in La Mesa. They were were booked on suspicion of multiple crimes including residential burglary, theft of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance, La Mesa Police Department Lt. Ray Sweeney said.

Officers used the “Find My iPhone” app to track the men from the robbery in La Mesa to an address in Chula Vista and back to La Mesa, Sweeney said.

The victim of the robbery called 911 at about 12:05 this morning to report two unknown suspects had just fled out the back door of his residence in the 5400 block of McRae Avenue, Sweeney said. The victim told police that the men had stolen prescription medication, a .40-caliber Glock 23 handgun, cash, credit cards and an iPhone.

La Mesa police called in a sheriff’s helicopter and used police dogs to search the area near the burglary, but did not locate the suspects, Sweeney said.

Officers then used the iPhone app to track the phone to an address in Chula Vista at about 1:45 a.m., Sweeney said. Chula Vista police said they had received a call from near the same address about two men who had left the area
in a dark colored, late model BMW.

La Mesa police used the app to see that the iPhone was on its way back towards La Mesa, Sweeney said. Police set up a perimeter near Eastridge Drive and Seattle Drive, and as they approached the BMW, the vehicle was driven away
with its lights off.

Officers stopped the vehicle at Murray Hill Road and Yale Avenue with the assistance of police dogs and the sheriff’s helicopter, where they arrested Pelayo and Gallardo, Sweeney said. The phone, gun, medications, credit cards and cash were all recovered.

The incident remains under investigation.
