Carjackers run off after crashing stolen cab
SAN DIEGO — A cab driver was carjacked at gunpoint, but the car thieves crashed the taxi about 2.5 miles away and ran off, a police officer said Friday.
The Yellow Cab driver was flagged down at Fairmount and Orange avenues shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday by a man and a woman, one of whom then pulled a handgun and threatened him, San Diego police Officer David Stafford said.
The man and woman then took off in the cab, but did not get far. Stafford said the suspects crashed into a car driven by a 50-year-old woman at Fairmount Avenue and Talmadge Place.
The car’s driver suffered only minor injuries, Stafford said.
The suspects fled following the collision and police found the taxi abandoned, according to Stafford.
The male suspect was described as Hispanic, 25 to 35, about 5 feet 10 and 180 pounds with short spiky hair. He was wearing a black shirt. The woman was Hispanic, in her 30s, about 200 pounds and heavyset. She was wearing a green shirt.
