Pipe bomb prompts closure of I-8

LA MESA, Calif. — Authorities briefly closed westbound Interstate 8 in La Mesa Monday while bomb technicians destroyed a pipe bomb on a freeway onramp, the California Highway patrol said.

I-8LaMesaClosureA Caltrans worker discovered the object sometime after 12:15 p.m. in iceplants growing on the side of the onramp to westbound I-8 from southbound Lake Murray Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP blocked the westbound lanes of the freeway for several minutes while bomb technicians detonated the pipe bomb in a nearby drainage ditch.

All lanes of the freeway were reopened at about 1:45.

The onramp was closed for about 9 minutes.
