Officers arrested the driver, only identified as a minor, a few blocks away. A short time later, the other suspects drove up in a car and were also taken into custody in the 1000 block of Third Street, police Cmdr. Laszlo Waczek said.
Investigators said the driver of the truck apparently stole the pickup from an off-base parking lot and were trying to drive to the Coronado Bridge when they inadvertently made a wrong turn and ended up stuck in traffic headed to the main entrance of the Navy base.
“The information we have now from the suspect is they they were here to steal vehicles,” said Chief Jon Froomin of the Coronado Police Department.
Navy personnel shut down the entrance while screening the pickup truck to make sure it did not contain anything dangerous. It was reopened around 3:30 p.m.
