Electrical fire blacks out beach neighborhoods

Power OutageSAN DIEGO — Crews worked Monday to restore power to nearly 850 homes and businesses in Pacific Beach and around Mission Bay.

San Diego Gas & Electric officials said 570 of the utility’s customers remained without electricity after the first outage struck at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday. Another 271 lost power at 4:46 a.m. today, according to the utility.

The outage was caused by an explosion and fire in an underground electrical box in the 3700 block of Mission Boulevard near Santa Clara around midnight, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Crews expect to have electricity restored by noon.
