Drunk man shot while trying to break into house

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — A drunken man tried to break into the wrong house and was shot by the resident, police said Sunday.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday, the drunken 41-year-old man allegedly tried to break through the front door of a home in the 900 block of Rutgers Avenue, near Otay Lakes Road. He broke a side gate and tried to get in again through a sliding glass door, according to Chula Vista police.

Chula Vista Police Department CVPDThe homeowner, who was inside with his family, repeatedly told the man to leave, called 911 and armed himself with a handgun, police said.

As the intruder was attempting to break through the home’s sliding glass door, the homeowner shot him once in the left leg, police said.

Medics took the wounded man to Scripps Mercy Hospital to be treated for injuries, which police said were not believed to be life-threatening.

Police officials said the Crimes of Violence Unit was investigating.

I can understand misplacing your housekeys after a few drinks. Misplacing your house?…Not so much!

This is exactly how it should end. Shot, still living, and in jail.

If the homeowner gets in trouble for this, I'm going to be upset. He did everything a responsible homeowner and gun owner SHOULD do. I'd be interested in a follow up on this story to make sure the homeowner isn't charged.

Nope… deadly force is called deadly for a reason, it's not called "injury force". You only shoot to kill, guess this guy never went through any of my firearms training courses. Center mass is the target and if the threat continues you place a well aimed shot to the head. It's much easier to hit your target when you're aiming for the torso than it is the leg. Shooting to wound is reckless.

Because executing a drunk man is the proper way to handle this situation. You're the kind of person that should not be allowed to own a gun.

Easy Doc Holliday. You stop the threat. If he missed and hit the leg, or intentionally shot to stop, and the threat, well, stopped, then guess who doesn't have ptsd for shooting a drunkard. You are giving gun owners and shooters a bad name. No need to be a gun store cowboy, there, Tex. Stop instructing, if you are, or get certified training, AND FOLLOW IT.
