Man killed while flagging down traffic on I-5

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — The man fatally struck by a car while apparently trying to flag down traffic on Interstate 5 in Chula Vista was publicly identified Sunday as a 21-year-old Oceanside man.

 

CHP CarsReyes Edric Gutierrez was observed walking southbound on the right shoulder of the northbound freeway, south of J Street, at 1:05 a.m. Saturday and appeared to be attempting to flag down traffic, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office and the California Highway Patrol.

 

Gutierrez was struck by a Honda Civic while attempting to cross the northbound lanes, officials with the Medical Examiner’s Office said.

 

The driver of the Honda Civic stopped and reported striking the pedestrian, who was declared dead at the scene by emergency personnel at about 1:20 a.m., authorities said.
