Interim Mayor Todd GloriaSAN DIEGO — Interim Mayor Todd Gloria Friday announced that he is backing Councilman David Alvarez to replace him as mayor.

“I am pleased to endorse David Alvarez to be our next mayor,”  Gloria said in a news release.

Gloria, who has won praise for leading the city since replacing Bob Filner after his Aug. 30 resignation, did not endorse anyone for the Nov. 19 special election and stayed out of the campaign for the Feb. 11 runoff until Friday’s announcement.

The interim mayor said he supported Alvarez because of his experience with him on the City Council and his emphasis on serving neighborhoods and building the local economy.

“This week, I put forward a progressive vision for San Diego to be a great city.  It includes ending homelessness, increasing the minimum wage, aggressively funding infrastructure, and implementing a strong Climate Action Plan,” Gloria said. “David Alvarez is the candidate in this race who shares my vision and who we can count on to make San Diego great.”
