OCEANSIDE, Calif. — Authorities were working Friday to identify a pedestrian who was struck by the mirror of one vehicle and was then run over by a second in an Oceanside roadway and died at the scene, a police sergeant said.
Witness statements and evidence at the scene indicated the pedestrian had been walking outside a crosswalk in the 3500 block of Mission Avenue near North Foussat Road about 5:45 p.m. Thursday when he was struck by the driver’s side mirror of a GMC pickup truck, Oceanside police Sgt. Gabe Jimenez said.
The impact caused the pedestrian to fall into the roadway where he was run over by an eastbound Dodge Caravan, Jimenez said.
Emergency personnel pulled the pedestrian from beneath the minivan and began administering first aid, but he died at the scene, Jimenez said.
The drivers of both vehicles stopped after the crashes and were cooperative with the investigation, and neither was suspected of drunken driving or speeding, Jimenez said.
The county Medical Examiner’s Office would work to identify the pedestrian, but his name would be withheld pending family notification, he said
Anyone with information on the crash was asked to call Accident Investigator Mark Fullen at 760-435-4624.
