Local schools to teach about Trayvon Martin case

SAN DIEGO – Local educators are preparing to teach the Trayvon Martin-George Zimmerman case to students.

During Tuesday’s San Diego Unified School District board meeting, board members discussed plans to implement a resolution approved in July. The resolution calls for dialogue about the Trayvon Martin case among middle and high school students across the district. It was spearheaded by board members Marne Foster and Richard Barrera.

TRAYVON_MARTIN_NEW_PHOTO_1The first lesson will take place next month at a town hall meeting in the Board of Education auditorium. Students from across the district are invited to participate in a discussion moderated by the Anti-Defamation League.

Among the panelists being considered are Chief of Police Services Rueben Littlejohn, Chief Student Services Officer Dr. Joe Fulcher and teachers, students and parents. Participating organizations being considered include the NAACP, San Diego Urban League, the City Human Relations Commission and the District Attorney’s Office.

School Board Member Scott Barnett has also asked that members of the Latino community and other groups be invited to participate, opening the discussion on profiling.

“After 9/11, especially, there was a tremendous amount of ethnic profiling of the Arabic and the Muslim community, just getting on planes and so forth,” said Barnett. “And we have a large segment of that community. And obviously the LGBTQ community and the disabled community.”

Along with discussing how students feel about the case and the verdict, students will also talk about “Stand Your Ground” laws.

Board members said the discussion will also include “The Single Stories” of Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman.

“It’s just recognizing that there’s more than one side to a story,” said Kyra Johnson, student representative. “And recognizing that there’s many perspectives that are different than your own.”

The plan is for student representatives to take what they learn at the district-wide town hall meeting and host later discussions at the school level.

Parent Ilka Weston said she is in support of the lessons.

“There is a lot going on in society today and this is just one of many that is absolutely heartbreaking and gut-wrenching and no words to describe it,” said Ilka Weston, parent. “But we need to be able to express it to our children in a positive way so they can grow from it.”

The town hall is scheduled for November 5 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. For further questions and information, you can contact the Race and Human Relations Office at maguirre@sandi.net

Mike, you are sooo right! SDUSD is suppose to teach K-12 and focus our kids on higher education. Teaching this nonsense of LBGT"Q" and the Zimmerman issue is not appropriate for K-12 students and I don't feel the teachers are qualified or prepared to teach this, these programs should be reserved for college and SDUSD should just concentrate on passing our children on the 3r's in which their failing anyway…

Yeah, a white guy from Australia gets shot and killed by little bangers and it hardly makes news because it does not involve a black person being shot.

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are both reverse racists but no one has the balls to say anything.

If their was WETV (white entertainment television) they would have a cow but it's OK to have BET (black entertainment television).

Seriously? Keep minorities thinking they are in some way victims so they never grow past their situation. Instill hate, mistrust and biased views of an unfortunate incident to further an agenda. Keep those generations of "entitlement" users going strong! Watch "Idiocracy" and get a sneak peek of our future, my kids will never set foot in a public school.

The more "progressive" we become, the more "regressive" we get. When will educators and policy makers realize they can't overcome what is learned (or not learned) in the home. Parents need to step up and "teach".

It will never make it to the schools Guest. Reverse discrimination is too popular in America. Why read about a white honor student being killed when you can read about a black gang banger thug being killed instead!!

When I went to grammar school in Chicago , they had all the white kids in advanced classes. All the special Ed kids were black. We learned about the revolutionary war . The pilgrims , George Washington fighting the red coats. But we learned nothing of our black history.
When did we loose our freedom? Why were we mistreated for a hundred more years after slavery ended ?
Why are we 50% of the prison but no senators?

The Trayvon Martin case had nothing to do with racial profiling! It was never brought up in the trial!
The liberal media and Al Sharpton turned it into a race-baiting debacle! What a shame that a school district thinks it's appropriate to continue this misinformation. There's nothing wrong with teaching students about racial profiling, but please, use a case that applies! Such ignorance is inexcusable.

Why don't the teachers stick with teaching reading, writing, math. Racial profiling has everything to do with this case and does not belong in any school. Some Minorities love to play the "victim" game. And that does NOT belong in the school. PERIOD!!!!!
