PPanga Marijuana SeizureSAN DIEGO — Federal border agents intercepted a small Mexican fishing boat loaded with thousands of pounds of marijuana off the San Diego coast this week.

Customs and Border Protection agents were patrolling the coast in an aircraft Wednesday when they spotted two men in an open fishing boat with an outboard motor near San Clemente Island about 38 miles from San Diego, officials said.

A Black Hawk helicopter, a Coast Guard cutter and a smaller vessel intercepted the panga and arrested the men. Agents found 216 bundles of marijuana on the boat, weighing 4,668 pounds. They estimated the street value of the drugs at $2,800,800.

The men on the boat , both Mexican citizens, were turned over to Homeland Security investigators.
