CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Nearly two dozen people were injured Monday morning when an SUV crashed into the back of a Metropolitan Transit System bus in Chula Vista.
The crash happened at about 7:20 a.m. on East H Street and Paseo del Rey east of Interstate 805, rescuers said. A Ford Explorer slammed into the rear of a route 709 bus, which had stopped to load and unload passengers.
Helicopter video showed the bus stopped at a transit stop surrounded by ambulances and emergency vehicles. Firefighters could be seen removing people from the bus on backboards and laying them out on the sidewalk.
A total of 21 people were injured, including the bus driver and the driver of the SUV. The victims complained of bumps, bruises and strained muscles. They were taken to several hospitals for evaluation and treatment, but most of the injuries were thought to be minor, rescuers said.
Two of three lanes on eastbound East H Street were closed, causing traffic to back up behind the crash scene.
