38 special

SOLANA BEACH–“Hold On Loosely”  and “Caught Up in You,” the classic country rock vibes from 38 Special are back and they’re swinging through The Belly Up in Solana Beach on October 3rd.  Yup, it’s right around the corner!   You can’t deny when you hear “Hold On Loosely” you immediately start singing along.   It’s one of those songs that for me makes me want to roll down my windows and drive down a beautiful country road–and smile.  It just gives me, personally, a good-happy feeling.   Perhaps, because it brings me back to a time in my life when I had no problems.  At 35, I am well aware life ain’t perfect and drama is sure to fill in the holes.  So to hear songs, like the ones these guys have recorded, that were popular when I was kid and I remember hearing on the radio–simply takes me back to that time and place; a problem free existence.   And let me tell you, that sure beats the cost of therapy!  For you newer country music fans, I’d describe this band as Montgomery Gentry mixed with classic rock so the appeal is widespread.  You get a good mix with these guys, and what’s not to love about a little throwback music?!

The group recently released Live from Texas, a new cd with their rock hits also including “Back Where You Belong” and “Fantasy Girl.”

Vocalist/Guitarist Don Barnes says it’s all about maintaining the intensity that they deliver in their live shows. “We never wanted to be one of those groups that had gotten a little soft or complacent over the years. We’ve always said that we don’t slack up, we stack up.”

The band has been touring since 1976, and they keep plugging away.  They’ve opened for Hank Williams Jr., Lynyrd Skynyrd, and REO Speedwagon.

I don’t know about you, but a cold brew on a beautiful fall San Diego night with these guys sounds just like the perfect recipe for happiness.

Hope to see you there!
