SAN DIEGO — A Coast Guard doctor and a civilian midwife delivered at baby aboard a cargo ship about 100 miles of the coast of San Diego, officials said Tuesday.

The medical team was flown out to the Caribbean Highway, a Panamanian vehicle carrier, Monday afternoon on a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter after the crew requested medical help for a 21-year-old crewmember who had gone into labor.

The healthy baby girl was born at about 7:50 p.m.

The ship continued to San Diego and arrived at 2 a.m. Tuesday, the Coast Guard said. The mother, a Philippine citizen, and child were taken to Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for follow-up care.
