Chargers doctor steps down

SAN DIEGO – Chargers team doctor David Chao told the organization he has decided to step down after 17 seasons with the team.

david-chaoChao said his decision was due to health reasons and to spend more time with his wife and three children, including two 7-month-old twins.

The doctor has worked through back pain issues for at least a year and will undergo surgery this month, U-T San Diego reported.

“He took multiple epidurals while traveling with the team last season to deal with back pain,” the newspaper said.

In recent years, Chao was criticized by the NFL players association for his care of players.

Christopher Wahl, the chief of sports medicine at the UC San Diego Health System, will replace Chao.
