Car kills South Bay cyclist in intersection

Bicycle AccidentCHULA VISTA, Calif. — A 59-year-old Chula Vista resident was hit by a vehicle while bicycling and later died in a hospital, police said Monday.

The rider was struck by a westbound vehicle shortly after 7:30 p.m. Sunday while crossing the intersection of Palomar Street and Industrial Boulevard, according to Chula Vista police Lt. Daniel Hardman.

The rider was taken by paramedics to UC San Diego Medical Center with critical injuries and later died, Hardman said.

Hardman said the driver involved in the crash did not appear to have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The Chula Vista Police Department’s Traffic Bureau was investigating the crash, he said.
