Man in wheelchair killed by truck

SAN DIEGO — A 70-year-old wheelchair-bound man hit and killed by a pickup truck while trying to cross University Avenue in City Heights was identified Wednesday.

William James Powell of San Diego died at Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest several hours after being struck while trying to cross University Avenue at 36th Street at about 8 p.m. Tuesday, according to police and the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

Powell suffered a broken pelvis and bleeding in the brain, police Officer Dino Delimitros said.

No other injuries were reported. The driver of the pickup, a 46-year-old man, remained at the scene.
