Man shot to death in Olivenhain

deputyENCINITAS, Calif. — Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating a shooting that left one man dead at a rural property of Olivenhain, east of Encinitas.

The shooting involved neighbors in the 2900 block of Lone Jack Road, a source told FOX 5 New on the condition of anonymity. The victim was shot in the head, the source said.

The  shooting took place at about 9 a.m.

The shooting took place in a hilly neighborhood with homes set back on large lots. The man’s body could be seen in helicopter video lying on a dirt path between two large homes. He appeared to be wearing a jogging suit.

As of late morning, deputies had several people in custody for questioning, Lt. Mike Munsey said. It was unclear if the detainees were
considered suspects or witnesses, according to Munsey.

Greg Beyer lives nearby. He heard sirens and came out to see what was going on.

“Six or seven police cars came up, and ambulance and a fire truck,” he said.

Beyer said the neighborhood is normally very quiet.
