Gabrielle Giffords’ husband pulls dog off hurt sea lion

Laguna Police Department officials said they don’t plan to file any charges after a dog belonging to the stepdaughter of former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords killed a sea lion in Laguna Beach over the weekend.

Police did not cite the owner “because it was legal for her to have the dog on the beach this time of year, and she did have it leashed. It was so strong that it pulled free of her when it saw the [sea lion],” said Laguna Beach Police Capt. Jason Kravetz.

It’s illegal for an owner to encourage a dog to attack marine life.

“That wasn’t the case in this situation,” Kravetz said.

A witness’ video shows the 65-pound American bulldog mix attacking the sea lion while Giffords’ husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, and her stepdaughter try to free the sea lion from the dog’s grip.

Jen Bluestein, senior advisor to the Giffords and Kelly’s Americans for Responsible Solutions PAC, confirmed to the Orange County Register that the dog belonged to Giffords’ stepdaughter.

Why does anyone need an assault dog. Assault dogs are way too easy to get. There should be a ban on dogs with high capacity teeth. Nobody needs a 65 pound dog. Dogs should be limited to no more than 25 pounds. There should be mandatory background checks on all dog owners. All dog shows should be banned. Private dog sales should be banned. All dog sales should go through licensed dog dealers. He should turn this dog into the dog catcher. Something has to be done to stop this senseless dog violence.

Why is it that there is no punishment whatsoever for this kind of disturbing situation? Just because of who the person is? She happens to be related to the Giffords woman so it’s treated like no harm no foul. Any other dog that may have been accidentally let go from their leash would be euthanized and punished to full extent for not having control over your animal. Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs but this whole situation really bothered me.

When are you people gonna get it? In the barrio I grew up in, we all know what these dogs are about and nobody but the gangsters wants them! Why do you think they’re all being shipped out of los angeles animal control to lily-white agoura’s shelter?! Because you guys haven’t got decades of experience behind you proving that these dogs will always have a killer instinct and/or unpredictable behavior! But, that’s fine. Keep trying to be heroes. It keeps them from roaming our streets!

And for all of you that are going to tell me how your best friend is a pitt, or that you let your infant sleep with a pitt, or that statistics show poodles bite more than pittbulls, stop already…if that we’re true, we wouldn’t be having this argument so frequently. Jeez, i guess im glad that we Hispanics have at least come further along in intelligence in one area.
