Retired astronaut Mark Kelly talks Giffords’ recovery at Scripps event

CARLSBAD, Calif. — Capt. Mark Kelly delivered the keynote speech at the 8th annual Scripps Brain Injury Rehabilitation Conference on Saturday.

Kelly’s wife, Gabrielle Giffords, continues to recover from traumatic brain injuries suffered during a 2011 shooting near Tucson, Arizona.

Mark KellyThen-Congresswoman Giffords was meeting with constituents when a gunman killed six people and wounded 13 others.

Speaking in front of doctors and caregivers, Kelly shared the story of how difficult his wife’s recovery has been.

“Her career ended.  Things she found so easy to do are now a struggle every single day.  Much like what every person with a traumatic brain injury experiences,” said Kelly.

After his speech, the retired astronaut signed copies of his book.

“As speech therapists, the treatment his wife received resonates with us.  Just getting to hear about her progress and to hear about his perspective as a husband and caregiver was really great,” said Cara Chung, a speech pathologist.

Kelly wrapped up his speech with a message from his wife.

“Be passionate, be courageous, be strong, be your best,” said Kelly.
