Popular hiking trail to close for restoration

SAN DIEGO — One of the most popular hiking trails in San Diego will be closed for two months for trail repairs and restoration.

The trail up the west side of Cowles Mountain is a mecca for hiking and fitness enthusiasts in Mission Trails Regional Park. The heavily used path begins at the intersection of Navajo Road and Golfcrest Drive  and climbs 1.5 miles to the highest point in the city of San Diego.

Trail restoration will begin this month on March 25.  The trail will be closed for nearly two months and reopen sometime around May 17.  Signs were posted recently at the base of the mountain to alert hikers of the closure.

Cowles Mountain (sometimes pronounced COALS)  sees more than a thousand hikers a week and many come daily.  It’s easy to see why it is such a popular hike. It’s centrally located and the round trip of 3 miles is a safe and convenient workout for all athletic abilities.  The average round trip time is one hour, although some people run up and back.  The mountain is about 1,600 ft. above sea level and the summit offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of central San Diego County.

The hundreds who hike Cowles daily say they’re going to have to find another way to get a workout.  “Not sure what we’re going to do, but hopefully it will be great one it reopens,” one hiker said.

    By the way, the sir name of the gentleman for whom the mountain was named, is pronounced "Coals", not "Cows." Cheers.

    Go around the corner and hike bakers trail or go up the east side from big rock park.

    The service road off tommy drive and cowles mountain blvd is always a nice workout as well.

    Go up the Big Rock trail on the east side. It is a fantastic workout and you still can get to the top to see the great view.
