CHULA VISTA, Calif. – Chula Vista police officials Friday were accepting monetary donations to help purchase socks and shoes for needy children.
School resource officers were working with school principals and nurses, along with South Bay Community Services counselors to identify the children who were the most in need, according to Chula Vista police.
The children will be invited to pick their shoes and socks at the third “Shoes and Socks Give-Away” at 8 a.m. Sunday at Payless Shoe Source, in the Chula Vista Center mall at 555 Broadway, police said.
“While some children return to school after the holidays with new clothes and shoes, many do not, as their families are often unable to provide either,” police said in a statement. “Perhaps more unfortunate if that students with damaged or tattered footwear are sometimes teased or even subjected to bullying, impacting their self-esteem and making it difficult to focus on their studies.”
During last year’s give-away, officers provided footwear to more than 1,000 boys and girls, police said, adding they sought to match or exceed that this year.
Donations, which are tax deductible, can be sent to the Chula Vista Police Foundation, Attn: Officer Hughes, 315 Fourth Ave., Chula Vista, CA, 91910. Checks should be made payable to the Chula Vista Police Foundation with “Shoes and Socks Event” written in the memo line.
