Search for murder suspect prompts school lockdowns

Tierrasanta ManhuntSAN DIEGO — Four Tierrasanta schools went into lockdown Tuesday as authorities searched for a homicide suspect out of Anaheim who was believed to have fled into a brushy open area in the neighborhood while trying to evade arrest.

The precautionary security measures at De Portola Middle School, Kumeyaay Elementary, Serra High and Tierrasanta Elementary went into effect about 1 p.m., after San Diego police reported that fugitive Matthew Rowley, 22, was at large in the vicinity, SDPD Detective Gary Hassen said.

As of 2:35 p.m., only Kumeyaay Elementary remained locked down.

Officers also closed down stretches of several streets while combing the area on foot and scanning it from above by helicopter, according to Hassen.

Details on the slaying allegedly committed by the suspect were not immediately available.
