Cops target speeders in East County
LA MESA, Calif. – La Mesa police ticketed 29 drivers for speeding, including one who was spotted traveling on a city street at more than double the posted speed limit, during a special enforcement effort Monday.
Officers aggressively targeted speeders during the third “Traffic Safety Enforcement Program,” held over a six-hour period, according to La Mesa police.
“The program relies on heavy enforcement and public education as a means to help reduce deaths and injuries on our local roadways,” according to police.
One of the 29 motorists cited for speeding was caught traveling at 81 mph on a street with a posted speed limit of 35 mph, police said. Officers also cited a motorist who was driving with a suspended license and impounded one vehicle.
Four drivers received verbal warnings for lesser violations, police said.
“These efforts will continue throughout the year and as long as it takes to get the message out to not speed in the city of La Mesa,” police said.
The operation was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
