The discovery happened during a routine inspection at the Border Patrol checkpoint near San Onofre. At about 10 a.m., agents became suspicious of a Mexican citizen driving a 2000 Nissan Sentra, so they referred him for a secondary inspection.
A Border Patrol drug sniffing dog alerted at the trunk of the car. Agents found a large speaker box in the trunk. and discovered 29 bundles of cocaine and one bundle of heroin in the box. The cocaine weight about 85 lbs. and had an estimated street value of $931,000, the Border Patrol said. The heroin weighed more than 2 lbs. and was worth about $28,000 on the street, agents said.
Tuesday evening, agents searched another car and found 1.21 pounds of methamphetamine. The car, driven by another Mexican citizen, was in a parking lot in Oceanside. The agents found the drugs in the dashboard of the car. The drugs had an estimated value of $24,000.
Both drivers were arrested and the drugs were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
