UCSD, SDSU make ‘best value’ list

SAN DIEGO — UC San Diego and San Diego State University are among the 100 top values for public colleges nationally, according to rankings released Friday by Kiplinger magazine.

student-feesUCSD ranked 10th for in-state students and 15th for out-of-state. SDSU was 77th for in-state and 73rd for out-of-state.

Many UC schools were in the top half of the list. UCSD was lauded for generous financial aid, lowest cost among the top rung of colleges and balmy climate.

Aside from the polytechnic schools at San Luis Obispo and Pomona, SDSU and Cal State Long Beach were the only California State University system schools to make the top 100.

The magazine came up with its rankings after it evaluated data from 600 public universities, including academic quality, acceptance and graduation rates, total costs with and without financial aid and average post-graduation student debt.

The biggest bang for your buck college — for the 12th time — was the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. According to the magazine, the school combines strong academics with a 77 percent graduation rate and low sticker cost.

Kiplinger released a similar ranking of best-value private universities in October. The University of San Diego was 84th and Point Loma Nazarene University was 96th.
