SAN DIEGO — A 24-year-old Otay Mesa man was killed when his speeding car careened off a San Diego freeway connector early Friday, authorities said.
Rodriguez was alone and driving westbound on the 94 connector bridge to southbound Interstate 15 when he failed to negotiate the curve at a high rate of speed and his vehicle went over a concrete barrier and off the overpass bridge, the coroner’s office reported.
The 2010 Toyota Corolla operated by Rodriguez landed on eastbound state Route 94 at Home Avenue and rolled over several times before coming to rest along the right shoulder of the highway. According to the coroner’s office, Rodriguez was thrown out of the car as it rolled over and he landed a short distance away.
Witnesses called 911 and medics arrived to pronounce Rodriguez dead at the scene.
The California Highway Patrol was investigating whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
The agency closed the offramp for its investigation for nearly three hours but the closure did not appear to have any significant impact on morning commuters in the area.
