CARLSBAD, Calif. — A freight train struck and killed a man near Buena Vista Lagoon early Tuesday.

The unidentified pedestrian’s body was found just south of Carlsbad Village Drive about 5:45 a.m., sheriff’s Sgt. Emory Wallace said.

The man apparently had been hit by a northbound Pacific Sun cargo train about 3 1/2 hours earlier, the sergeant said.

The county Medical Examiner’s Office will seek to determine the victim’s identity, along with the circumstances of his death.
