21 cited in Chula Vista DUI sweep

CHULA VISTA, Calif. – A suspected drunken driver was arrested and 21 motorists were cited for license violations at a checkpoint in Chula Vista, officials said Sunday.

Officers also issued 13 other citations Saturday night at the checkpoint in the 600 block of H Street, near Broadway, Chula Vista police Officer Margarita Walker said.

Walker said the checkpoint was part of the city’s commitment to traffic safety and was one of many that had been or will be conducted this year.

“DUI checkpoints along with regularly scheduled high visibility DUI enforcement serves as a proven deterrent with the goal of removing alcohol and drugged impaired drivers and heightening awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence,” Walker said in a statement.

The Chula Vista Police Department tentatively set its next checkpoint for Dec. 21, Walker said. The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Doesn’t it seem strange to call this a DUI sweep??? 1 suspected DUI and 34 citations for license and other non DUI offenses. Why not call it what it is?? Text NODUI to 51515 for free text alerts. http://www.MrCheckpoint.com

You are just encouraging people to drive drunk and avoid getting stopped.

You drive through a checkpoint, you get what is coming to you regardless if you are DUI or not. Why drive through knowing there is a chance to get stopped if you have no license? That is just crazy. Then again, I don’t care who and how many get busted just as long as they do. I am legal and have been driving legal for over 20 years. It’s not hard to stay clean… Follow the rules, end of story.
